Distinguishing features

The genus Zygometra is differentiated from other crinoids by a particular type of articulation in the first division series. This character is impossible to determine in living specimens, making the genus difficult to identify in the field.

Zygometra elegans has up to 40 arms and long cirri with at least 40 segments according to Clark & Rowe (1971) but a photo of the holotype (WORMS accessed 24 Nov 2019) shows cirri with only about 20 segments. The preserved holotype has pale arms with many darker spots.

Distribution and habitat preferences

Not known but probably soft bottom.

The single specimen from the Lizard Island area in the Australian Museum collection appears to be from an off-reef habitat.
