Distinguishing features
A small silver fish with a yellowish sheen; a brown line through eye that extends from bottom lip to level of pectoral fin insertion; black spot on tail base and a smaller one near rear top of head.
Lizard Island specimens do not seem to have a dark patch on the first dorsal fin that is described for this species.

Specimens from the Lizard Island area originally identified as Apogon notatus have all been renamed in Atlas of Living Australia (accessed 19 Jan 2019) as Ostorhinchus jenkinsi. Rudie Kuiter noted via iNaturalist through Mark McGrouther that A. notatus is a Japanese endemic.
