Distinguishing features

All species of Actinopyga have distinct anal "teeth" that are visible in the field. None of the Actinopyga species eject cuverian tubules when disturbed.

Actinopyga echinites is brown all over and is often covered with sand. When the sand is removed, the skin surface is thick, firm, rough and papillate.

Distribution and habitat preferences

Actinopyga echinites is not common at Lizard Island. It is common on the reef flat near the crest on the front side of nearby Eyrie Reef.
