Distinguishing features

Large eye and distinct bump on head. Juveniles have three or four white vertical bars, 3 to 4 scale rows wide, on a dark body that is paler below. Body bars fade with age, starting with first and last bars. Large adults have no bars, tail loses colour but there are often yellow tints on head, especially lips. A dark spot at base of pectoral fin persists throughout life.
