Distinguishing features

Elongate black spot on the first dorsal fin, two dark stripes on the body, two elongate filaments on the tail in adults (Hoese and Larson, 1994). The dorsal fin spot is conspicuous and the dark stripes extend to the tip of the tail fin.

Local abundance

  • Lizard Island: Rarely seen. Hoese and Larson (1994) report that it is normally found in deep water and is relatively rare across its wide geographical distribution, and note: "It has been observed at Lizard Island over a flat sandy bottom at 24 m, hovering over a large pile of coral rubble and bits of shell at its burrow entrance."
