Distinguishing features

Varanus gouldii is a valid species found over much of Australia including the mainland coast near Lizard Island (Wilson and Swan, 2010), but it does not occur at Lizard Island despite some published reports. Those records are misidentifications of Varanus panoptes which is the only goanna species in the Lizard Island Group. The distributions of the two species overlap on the mainland (Wilson and Swan, 2010).
