Distinguishing features
Two dark bars, the first does not descend lower than pectoral fin base. A dark patch around the eye and a bright red rim to iris. Base colour can change rapidly from yellow to white or purple.

species: Parupeneus bifasciatus
The name Parupeneus bifasciatus has been used for this species on the Great Barrier Reef. Randall and Myers (2002) showed that the correct name in the western Pacific is Parupeneus crassilabris. Parupeneus bifasciatus is a synonym of Parupeneus trifasciatus, and that species is restricted to the Indian Ocean.
