Species Bohadschia sp. 2

Distinguishing features

A large, solid holothuroid with distinctive colour pattern as shown. Ejects Cuvierian tubules when disturbed.

Similarly-coloured Bohadschia individuals have been recorded from Lizard Island, Micronesia and Japan (Uthicke et al, 2010; Kim et al, 2013). These may be hybrids of Bohadschia argus and Bohadschia vitiensis based on molecular evidence. The specimens reported as Bohadschia sp. A by Uthicke et al (2010) had B. argus mtDNA and the specimens reported as Bohadschia hybrid by Kim et al (2013) had mt DNA of either B. argus or B. vitiensis.

Bohadschia maculisparsa Cherbonnier and Feral, 1984, appears to have the same colour pattern. The species is known only from the holotype from New Caledonia and it may be a hybrid individual.
