Distinguishing features
This species was described by Calgren in 1900 from Zanzibar and it may be synonymous with Mesactinia ganensis, described by England in 1987 from Singapore (Joe Rowlett via iNaturalist, Aug 2020). It does not appear to have been recorded from Australia under either name (Atlas of Living Australia accessed 31 Aug 2020). This species has not yet been observed in the wild at Lizard Island. It establishes in aquaria at LIRS that are set up for long periods (months to years) and can reach very large numbers. It appears to be a fouling species.
