Distinguishing features

Allen et al (2003) note that colour pattern of this species is highly variable, covering the range shown in the two photos provided here. There are usually 5 to 6 broad bars on the sides of variable intensity. Tips of the dorsal fin spines are not always black, as implied by the common name. In the Lizard Island area, the dorsal fin spines seem to be black basally and white at the tips.
