Comments

This is clearly a specimen of Chicoreus and is not Chicoreus ramosus (which has a very broad siphonal canal) or Chicoreus microphyllus (which is much less spiny). It is similar to Chicoreus rubiginosus as illustrated by Wilson (1990) but that name is a synonym of C. torrefactus according to WORMS (accessed 23 Nov 2016). Photos of C. torrefactus do not resemble the Lizard Island specimen so it is listed here as Chicoreus sp. 1.

Several species of Chicoreus have been recorded from the Lizard Island area. This may well be one of them but it needs expert identification.
