Location details

  • Lizard Island, Queensland

  • N end of Casuarina Beach

  • Marine specimens found at a depth between 1 m and 3 metres.

Details about the specimens

  • 5 specimens. (exact)
  • specimens alive when found.
  • specimens alive at end of the observation process.
  • specimens left in natural environment.
  • Reproduction was occurring.

Four of the five specimens were spawning. Each was within 5 m of another and all were within a circle of ~20 m radius. Two were almost white, fully out of the sand, in erect spawning posture and spawning "normally" (gametes propelled upwards in a stream). The other three were much darker brown. One of the brown ones was in normal spawning posture, spawning normally. One was still half buried, not raised at all, and spawn coming out of the gonopore was just pooling on its head - looked odd. The third was completely out of the sand but in normal prone posture and not spawning.
